The dagger of his mouth

During the six weeks from term beginning, I have tried three projects - Illuminate, Structure & Surface. I hope my design can initiate people to think about the social phenomena. At the first beginning, I did not know how to combine my research with the actual work, and gain any development. Although I chose Jewelry major before the start of foundation, I still wanted to independently accomplish the project and reflect myself by this major, thus confirming whether I am interested in this direction or not and whether I am suitable for this major or not.

In the Illuminate project, I was inspired by Butterfly Effect: a butterfly in the Amazon rainforest flaps its wings by chance, which can cause a tornado in Texas, US after two weeks.         I hope my design can endow people a pair of wings so that people can rethink the Butterfly Effect. Even the smallest act also have the greatest power to affect the world -- do not do evil things though they may be insignificant, do not give up good things though they may be minor matters. I avoided the shortage of the unknown on carrying out my project by using the experiences of Illuminate for reference. In the previous research of Structure&Surface, I sought for mass works of designers and artists to motivate my inspiration. I discussed the effects of different materials with the instructors in workshop, so I searched for materials which are more suitable for my design and made a plenty of material tests (hardboard, wood, acrylic and cement). In this process, I have even been able to cut, weld and polish metals, which helps me to achieve my ideas better. I really enjoy my working time in workshop. The Extention project is based on the structure & surface projects, which adopts various materials to acquire the final design effect and make it true.

Taking Extention project as an example, I continue developing the direction of "fragility". As we all know, communication is the bridge of maintaining interpersonal relationships. It is hard to avoid a series negative emotions when having conflicts. In daily life, negative emotion is like a dagger which hurts yourself and others and makes the interpersonal relationship more "fragile". I wanted to make the abstract negative emotion present with the concrete jewelry, which allows people to directly feel the great power and serious consequence of negative emotions. Therefore, they can understand the necessity of controlling negative emotions and aware to restrict their behaviors when communicating with others. At first, I referred to lots of materials about negative emotions, and summarized several typical behaviors caused by negative emotions. Next, I studied many works involved in negative emotions, including "Another Skin" designed by Akiko Shinzato, "Not your average beauty" designed by Joanne Tan. With the stimulating of these works, I determined the presentation way of my design, which is the way centers on the eyes and throat. Mostly, negative emotions show by facial expressions and languages, such as fierce eyes and hurtful words. In material tests, I found the broken mirror can fully express my actual minds on "negative emotion", so I decided to use mirror as my main material. When designing the final work, I made many available plans. To make sure the best effect, I made model for each plan, which is in the way of adorning by itself to judge whether viable or not. I selected the model with best adorning effect for further processing and improving my final design result.

During this period, I have developed a habit of observing and recording life by these courses, and learnt to efficiently gain needed data by Websites, Journals, Library and Museums, etc.  I am able to express clearly my minds by rough draft, displaying its progress, and to establish quickly the models which is helpful for my thinking, improving my ideas. Certainly, I am more determined to learn Jewelry Design. In the following courses, I desire to positively explore and attempt more materials which I have never used before, appreciate more design works, analyze the way by which designers achieve their minds, and understand the process in which designers grow and develop. I hope I can grow better and progress more by these design works.

11.10.19 extention

Today we start extension project,I continue developing the direction of "fragility".Before I started, I redrew a mind map of fragility.I listed all the things I associate with vulnerability, such as mirrors, glass, protection, human relationships, hedgehogs.Through the association and development of mind mapping, I found a topic that interested me - "negative emotions".

30.9.19 structure & surface 3⃣️

I want to design a structure that can interact with the body. From the beginning, I try to generalize the human body with a simple structure, and then add structure to the structure to make the structure from simple to complicated. I like the feeling of the triangle, simple and personality.

I covered the face with a triangle structure, and created a variety of structures by changing the size of the triangle, the number of intersections, and the number of layers.

WechatIMG279.jpeg

I chose one of the most satisfactory structures from the many structures I got.

25.9.19 Worksheet 4

Prown Analysis

WechatIMG132.jpeg

Description

For Example:

What type of product is it?  Film tape

What is it made of? A plastic tape case a tape cover and a tape

What are the formal qualities? E.g. Colour, shape,  Black - based tape cover, transparent rectangular box

What are the surface qualities? The surface is smooth

What are the structural qualities? It is a cuboid with six faces, two of which are equal in phase and twelve edges.

 Deduction

For Example:

How is it made? (by hand or machine or a combination?)  By machine

Is this sustainable? No,it isn’t

What is its intended use? Used to play movies

Who is the intended user? People who want to see movies

What is the expected lifespan? Very long, maybe twenty years or more, as long as the tape doesn't get damaged and can be looped all the time

Speculation

Why did you choose this product? Visual appearance, texture, material, humour etc  I really like the cover design of this tape, which has a retro feeling

What else could you use it for? Play the movie

In what way could it be relevant for the surface and structure project? Its surface is smooth, it is structured

Is it ethical? Yes,it is.

Consider the social, economic, cultural and historical context?

A few decades ago, movie tapes were so rare that if there was a movie tape in the family, the whole family would gather around the television and watch it. With the progress of science and technology in today's society, people have more choices and channels to watch movies. Fewer and fewer families choose to watch movies together.

 Object Layout Rationale

 Scenario Description

 WechatIMG131.jpeg

List the objects in order and Include a photograph.

WechatIMG124.jpeg

We decided to arrange the objects according to their height

 WechatIMG130.jpeg

Silly putty, mouth freshener, small kettle, coffee cup, perfume, can, cup, glove, window cleaner, movie tape, book, fly swatter

 Prompts:

What is the context, site or landscape?

On the group discussion table in class

Are there any difficulties/limitations in this situation?

Since there is no standard for measuring which part of an object is long and which part is high, it is impossible to determine which part of an object should be measured for height (such as fly swatter). In our measurement, we choose the part with the longest measurement as the height

How will the objects be used?

Commemorative collection

Is this different from their planned use?

It used to be for watching movies, but now the way of watching movies is more and more convenient and the picture is more and more clear. Now movie tapes are more used for collecting and commemorating

Would you change the order of the objects in any way?

Yes, such assize, durability,shade, colour,strength,weight,cost,eco-friendly

24.9.19 structure & surface 1⃣️

This week we started a new project named “structure & surface”. I started my primary research this afternoon,I was looking for different visual dictionary vocabulary on the road to school and home, likeFragile,Knotted, Modular, Woven, Stretched, Folded,Perforated,Tessellated,Textured, and so on. I took a photo with my mobile phone and recorded it.After my primary research I thought my mind was opened and so many ideas came up in my head. Then I did some secondary research in the library based on the given visual dictionary, including architecture, furniture, installation art and jewelry accessories.

This morning we went to Kings Cross campus to do the research to explore the interaction between light and space. We were asked to finish 10 photographs, 10 sketches and 5 short video. But today is cloudy and the light is weak. I think it is not good for shooting the light and shadow structure outside, so I decided to shoot some indoor light and shadow inside the teaching building.I selected some parts with clear structure and sufficient light to take photos and draw.

In the afternoon, we went back to the classroom to discuss and discuss our own primary research and second research. I divided my research into diffuse, bright, geometry, on the body, playful, product, translucency, spatial and shadow play.During the discussion with my classmates, I became more and more clearly aware of my interest in shadow play, so I wanted to work in this direction in this project.

In addition, I researched another designs which focus on light,Lena Grabher and Kyeok Kim, they use light and shadow to make jewelry.Lena Grabher's work is made up of many small pieces of glass, which reflect surprisingly beautiful shadows in the sun by changing the number and thickness of their layers.I found it interesting to use the refraction of light to create beautiful shadows, and I thought I might be able to apply it to my work .Kyeok Kim's work is different from most works that use external light source, the light source of her work is set inside the work. She covered the light source with metal with a hollow design, and the light through the hollow part reflected on her body to form a beautiful pattern like a tattoo.I feel that her idea is very novel, using light source from another angle.

Project Title: Strandbeests

Designer: Theo Jansen

Date of production: Since 1990

Historical context:

Jansen was born in Scheveningen in the Netherlands. He grew up with a talent for both physics and art, and studied physics at the Delft University of Technology . Jansen left the university in 1974 without a degree. While at Delft, Jansen was involved in many projects that involved both art and technology, including a paint machine and a flying-saucer machine.

What: strandbeesten , which are moving kinetic structures, sometimes wind-propelled, that resemble walking animals, described by Jansen as artificial life. All of his models are based on a system of triangles and connecting links which convert the rotation of an axle into a stepping motion of six or more legs.

Material: Constructed from PVC piping, wood, fabric airfoils, and zip ties.

Process:  What was at first a rudimentary "breed" has evolved slowly, with the help of evolutionary computation techniques, into a generation of kinetic sculptures that to some degree can react to their environment. For example ,they use simple sensors to avoid obstacles, and when storms come, they know how to stake themselves in wet sand. Jansen allowed creatures to compete with each other, choose winners and reproduce themselves to evolve into more and more complex creatures.

Why:"Strandbeests" relies on mechanical principles and natural wind to move forward.

Discipline:design

Aim: Jansen‘s goal was to create the lifelike movement of the dynamic sculpture. Finally, he proved that the sculpture could have its own life and even move itself with the combination of plastic tubes and bottles. Jansen hopes his creature will eventually have a nervous system, muscles and advanced sensors to survive and evolve on its own on the beach.

Research methods used to develop the project:

Jansen took the finished product to the beach and tested it to find flaws and shortcomings in the real environment.Overcome the problem by experiment after experiment. He allowed creatures to compete with each other, choose winners and reproduce themselves to evolve into more and more complex creatures.

Successful: Theo Jansen has successfully brought forward-looking design to the stage of art. He gave the kinetic sculptures only a basic set of motion mechanisms, and when they were finished, nature gave them life, perhaps in the form of wind or water. The dynamic sculpture created by him is realistic in action. Finally, he proves that the sculpture can have its own life and even move itself with the combination of plastic tube and plastic bottle.

Problem : It don't have a nervous system, muscles and advanced sensors to survive and it can't evolve on its own on the beach.

This project is ethical. The materials used in this project are all waste materials and can be recycled without damaging the environment. This project combines the knowledge of physics and art to make people feel the beauty from the boring knowledge and arouse people's interest in the principle and learn it.It has no adverse impact on the environment, society, culture, politics, geography or economy.

 This source connect with:Build it

Relevant to my work: Strandbeests aroused my interest in structure and prompted me to continue my exploration.I used a similar material - bamboo rod to make the structure.Like it, I used a stable triangular shape to build the frame.

My project crossovers with other types of structure:

1.Coll-Barreu Arquitectos, Basque Health Headquarters

2.Coop Himmelblau, Pavillion 21, Munich Opera

3.Thomas Saraceno, Cloud City

Mostly, negative emotions show by facial expressions and languages, such as fierce eyes and hurtful words. In material tests, I found the broken mirror can fully express my actual minds on "negative emotion", so I decided to use mirror as my main material. Because the mirror itself is a kind of fragile brittle material, and the broken mirror, sharp aggressive as negative emotions, when people are negative emotion itself is fragile, the small changes will cause a reflection of its huge, just like a hedgehog, in his own set up around the sharp thorn, will be cut off from the world. Dealing with others with negative emotions in life is like words and expressions full of thorns that will cause irreparable damage to those around them.

When designing the final work, I made many available plans. To make sure the best effect, I made model for each plan, which is in the way of adorning by itself to judge whether viable or not. 19.10.19 Extension

I got inspiration by winding the wire on the head model. I drew a lot of ideas when designing the finished product. In order to determine the best effect, I made a model for each solution and ensured the design by wearing the upper body. The solution is feasible and contrasts the wearing effect.

WechatIMG344.jpeg

At first I wanted to wear my design on the face through a "nose pad". I made the first model wearing attempt, but it is a pity that a nose pad can't fix the piece on the face. But I didn't want to give up the way to wear it through the nose, so I tried to design a bigger and more stable nose pad structure, but the second model still did not succeed. I have to try other ways of wearing.

WechatIMG420.jpeg

The third model is a "W" shaped spectacles-like structure. I hope this structure is close to the cheek, extending from the bridge of the nose along the contour of the face to the back of the ear.But during the making of the model, I found it difficult to fit the frame completely to the face. The model is not ideal because the structure does not fit the face completely.

WechatIMG416.jpeg

In the fourth model I tried to let the structure extend vertically downward from under the eyes, along the contour of the jaw line, and finally in the ear.I am more satisfied with the effect of this model, but because the structure is from bottom to top, the structure can not play the role of lifting objects, so the pressure on the nose is relatively large.

WechatIMG417.jpeg

In view of the fourth model, in the fifth model I tried to design a top-down structure. I used a shape like a headband to fix the structure on top of my head. After wearing the try, I feel that fixing the structure through the top of the head is a good idea.

WechatIMG418.jpeg

On the basis of the model five, the model six I changed the fixed part, let the structure extend along the contour of the top of the head to the back neck fixed.I am very satisfied with this model.

In this process, I have even been able to cut, weld and polish metals, which helps me to achieve my ideas better. I really enjoy my working time in workshop.

This afternoon is a demonstration of the Structure & Surface project, and I have seen many interesting works. A chandelier made from ground mushrooms: the mushrooms are crushed and placed in a microwave oven to make a ring-shaped lampshade. Rotating flyover: The flyover is surrounded by two huge drums that rotate in opposite directions around the bridge.

26.9.19 structure &surface 2⃣️

I am pleased with my research. In my primary research I photographed many structures and surfaces in life,The spider web intrigued me.It was interesting to me that the spider was pulling in different shapes, so I did a lot of work on the different mesh drawing structures.

Based on the pictures I found of the different mesh drawing structures I made many sketches of different mesh structures,I think my paintings fully reflect the structure I want to express.

I try to use different materials to represent the mesh structure, such as glue, mesh material, engraved texture on the metal plate, portrayed on cardboard.I tried to draw a mesh texture on the plastic board with glue. After painting, I washed it with cold water to let the glue cool down quickly, but I found it difficult to remove it from the plastic board. For the second attempt, I repeated the first experiment after applying a layer of hand sanitizer on the plastic plate. This time, it is easy to remove the glue from the plastic plate.

WechatIMG211.jpeg WechatIMG210.jpeg

I feel that the effect of the glue is not good enough to fully express the feeling of the spider silk. Glue is not well controlled, although it can achieve the feeling of drawing but can not accurately represent the net of different shapes. At this time, the cardboard caught my attention. I portrayed different mesh textures on the cardboard, which made me feel very interesting. Various forms of mesh texture are very solid on cardboard, and cardboard can more accurately represent the mesh of various shapes.

24.9.19 illuminate

Today is the day when the illuminate project ends. At the exhibition, I saw a lot of sketches and finished products, and I saw a lot of great ideas. After reading the students' works, I reflected on myself and felt that there were still many shortcomings. In this project, my process development is not complete enough, and the basic investigation and the finished product are not closely connected. Some students mastered good welding techniques and used the workshop to complete the finished product. But in this work, I just finished working through the glue gun. In the next project, I want to try to use the workshop to get the job done. In this design, I feel that my thoughts are too limited, just use the light source to illuminate the finished product to produce the shape of the wings. If there is a chance to re-develop, I want to consider the interaction between the whole person and the light and shadow, making the project more interesting. In the end, some of the better projects that have been completed are required to be introduced. Through the introduction, I can better understand how these works develop and get more ideas.

This afternoon, we started the next project Structure & Surface. The instructor introduced us to different structures and textures and gave us a lot of keywords. When I was looking for items about these keywords in school, I found a lot of details that I wouldn't find.

23.9.19 illuminate 5⃣️

The mirror paper reflected the light and shadow like wings in the light, which inspired me.The mirror paper reflected the light and shadow like wings in the light, which inspired me. I want to give people a pair of wings made up of light and shadow through the effect of this mirror paper under the light.Realizing the dream of people having wings through light and shadow I feel that this is very meaningful and very interesting.

First, I look at the data to learn more about the principle of light reflection and the principle of shadow formation.

Reflection of light:
An optical phenomenon. Refers to the phenomenon that when the light propagates to different

substances, it changes the direction of propagation at the interface and returns to the original material. Light is reflected on the surface of the water, glass, and many other objects. When light changes the direction of propagation at the interface between two substances and returns to the original material, it is called the reflection of light.

page1image5905312

The reflected light is on the same plane as the incident ray and the normal; the reflected ray and the incident ray are separated on both sides of the normal; the reflected angle is equal to the incident angle.

page1image5906144
The reason for the shadow formation is that the light travels along a straight line.
When light encounters an opaque object in the process of traveling along a straight line, the light is blocked by the object and cannot reach behind the object. A dark area similar to the outline of the object is formed behind the object, which is the shadow of the object.

21.9.19 illuminate

In the Illuminate project, I was inspired by Butterfly Effect: a butterfly in the Amazon rainforest flaps its wings by chance, which can cause a tornado in Texas, US after two weeks.         I hope my design can endow people a pair of wings so that people can rethink the Butterfly Effect. Even the smallest act also have the greatest power to affect the world -- do not do evil things though they may be insignificant, do not give up good things though they may be minor matters.

19.9.19 illuminate 4⃣️

I was inspired by Lena Grabher's design. She used a transparent plastic-like material. She folded and combined the material to achieve crystal-clear crystals in the sun, so I decided to experiment with plastic. Effect in the sun and its shadowThe shadow of plastic in the sun is very good, it is the ripple effect of water. But I feel that the effect of the shadow is not obvious enough.

WechatIMG86.jpeg WechatIMG88.jpeg

At this time I thought of another material - mirror paper.

I made three models from mirror paper:
1. Cut the center of the mirror paper into thin strips with the mirror paper facing outward and stick the diagonals of the mirror paper to each other.
2. Cut the center of the mirror paper into thin strips with the mirror paper facing inward and stick the diagonals of the mirror paper to each other.
3. Cut the center of the mirror paper into thin strips, the mirror paper is facing outward, and the diagonals of the mirror paper are glued to each other and then the strips are folded.

I observed these three models with light and found that the third model works best.I am very satisfied with the effect of the mirror paper under the light, its shadow is clear and the outline is good. The light reflected from the mirror paper is intertwined and bright like a wing.In the end, I decided to use mirror paper as the material for my finished product.

At the beginning of today, we divided into groups. I chose shadow play that I am interested in. After group discussion, I still haven't confirmed my design. I decided to experiment around the shadow of the object and find inspiration during the experiment. I made three models and then shone a flashlight at them from different angles in the same direction to record the shadow changes.

In the process of finding inspiration, I use my model as a starting point to divergent thinking and imagine how they are combined with the body. I use sketches to record my thoughts.

WechatIMG273.jpeg

WechatIMG274.jpeg

12.9.19 Wear It

Today's topic for our project is Wear It, where we explore how to position objects on the body and question what it means to wear something and what it feels like.

What is the definition of ‘to wear’?

  1. to carry or have on the body or about the person as a covering, equipment, ornament
  2. to have (something) on one’s body as clothing, decoration, or protection
  3. to habitually have or use on one’s body or be dressed in

First, the teacher asked us to think deeply and brainstorm about what hanging/surrounding/supporting is and what can be hung/surrounding/supporting.

WechatIMG78.jpeg.2

Then we need to finish 30 creative sketches in 30 minutes. (10 minutes per word) develop ideas for wearable objects and explore interesting ways to connect materials and objects to different parts of the body.

After drawing the sketch, I need to choose one to develop the design, which is difficult for me, I don't know how to choose which one is better. After discussing with the students in the same group, they gave me good Suggestions and ideas, then I chose an idea from Surround.

10.9.19 Build It

First of all, the  teacher introduced us to many interesting architectural structures. The interesting structure of these buildings gave me a lot of inspiration.

The second, we(my group) were asked to create two Platonic structures from the handout, using the shorter bamboo rods. After we finished the construction, we started to think about how to add the structure between the two structures to make the connection between the two structures. We add long and short bamboo poles in the two structures to connect the two structures. Then, we look again at the ‘inside’ of the new, combined structure about  what pieces could you remove to improve the internal spaces? where might you add pieces to make the structure stronger? To make the structure stronger, we added a bamboo pole in the middle of the square to make it into two triangles. Because a triangle is the strongest shape. We also removed some useless bamboo poles from the structure in order to make the structure more concise. As we went deeper, we met some problems about balancing so we added some more structures from the original idea. Finally, we got a satisfactory structure. We drew the structure of our group's design from different perspectives.

After, We need to cover our structure and I feel it would be interesting to cover our structure with different textured surfaces.

At the end of the class we connected all the group structures together to form a huge structure occupying the classroom. Each group has the same elements (all made of bamboo and paper) but each has its own characteristics.

What is your understanding of the relationship between shape and structure ?Shape is only the geometric relationship of objects expressed, and structure is the objective expression of physical relations such as force, which is not only the geometric structure but also the result of various factors. In my opinion ,an object that has a structure must have a shape, but it doesn't necessarily have a structure if it has a shape.

Which shape is the most visually interesting?

I think the most visually interesting thing is the triangle. The triangle is very advanced and the sharp Angle can attract people's attention.

You were asked to week in a team-how did that make you feel?

Teamwork is very comfortable, the reasonable division of labor in the team greatly improves the work efficiency, there will be more creativity and ideas, everyone can learn from each other and use their strengths.

How did the decision making process evolve in your group?

At the beginning of the development of the work, many different ideas will be put forward. After discussion, we choose the most interesting scheme to implement.

I proposed to cover the structure with different textured materials, which the group agreed with very much.

What was successful about your structure?

The structure of our group is very stable and not easy to destroy. The shape of the structure is beautiful. The materials used to cover the structure use different textures and textures, which can arouse people's interest in exploration and appreciation. In the later adjustment of the work, some boring and meaningless coverage in structure was reduced. And added more different texture materials to try and use.

I really enjoyed working with a team to create the structure.
